Frequently Asked Questions

How does Malaseb® Medicated Shampoo help my pet?

Malaseb® Medicated Shampoo  is formulated to remove scale, degrease the skin and kill cutaneous micro-organisms that primarily or secondarily cause dermatitis.

Why does my pet get these infections?

It is normal for pets to have low numbers of resident bacteria and yeast on the skin surface. When there is a disruption to the skin’s natural ecosystem these bacteria and yeast can overgrow, leading to skin disease.
Underlying causes of secondary bacterial and yeast infections of the skin can include:

  • Allergy – environmental allergens such as tree pollens and weeds, food allergy, flea allergy.
  • Parasites, such as fleas, mites and lice.
  • Hormonal or endocrine diseases.

It is important to treat the secondary infection as well as the underlying condition for optimal management of the skin disease.

If you are concerned your pet may have a skin infection, please visit your local veterinarian for a consultation. Diagnostic tests, such as cytology, will be necessary to determine which micro-organisms are present. This is essential in determining the best treatment and product for your dog.

Which animal is Malaseb® Medicated Shampoo suitable for?

Malaseb® Medicated Shampoo is registered for use in dogs and cats.

What is dermatophytosis (ringworm)?

Dermatophytosis, commonly known as ringworm, is a contagious fungal disease affecting the skin and coat of pets.

Malaseb® Medicated Shampoo kills infective fungal spores on the coat. This helps to prevent the spread of the disease and reduces environmental contamination. The use of Malaseb® Medicated Shampoo in conjunction with a systemic antifungal reduces the time to clinical resolution when compared with using a systemic antifungal alone.

It is important to note that young children or people with a compromised immune system may be at a greater risk of contracting dermatophytosis (ringworm).

If you have an animal that has been diagnosed with or is suspected to have dermatophytosis, please discuss this with your doctor.

How to use

  • Directions for use

    • Wet the animal thoroughly with clean water.
    • Apply Malaseb® Medicated Shampoo to your pet at several points and massage into the coat.
    • Using a sponge may assist with lathering and penetration of the shampoo through the coat.
    • Use approximately 1-2 mL per kg of body weight.
    • Leave the shampoo on for 10 minutes. Ensure your pet is supervised during this time to avoid ingestion or inhalation of the shampoo.
    • Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Read label instructions carefully prior to use.

  • Tips for bathing cats

    • Many cats will tolerate water better if it is not running.
    • Fill 3 large buckets with warm water.
    • Gently dunk the cat (not including the head) into the first bucket and then apply shampoo as directed to form a lather.
    • Wrap the cat in a towel for 10 minutes to keep them warm, secure and prevent them from licking the shampoo foam.
    • Once the 10 minutes is up the cat is sequentially dunked into the remaining two buckets to thoroughly rinse off all shampoo.
  • Precautions

    • Use with caution around eyes. If shampoo enters the animal’s eye, flush thoroughly with clean water. Seek veterinary advice if eye changes are observed.
    • Pets should not be left unattended during the recommended 10 minute shampoo contact time as licking or inhaling shampoo foam may result in irritation of the gastrointestinal or respiratory tracts.
    • This product is not recommended for use in rabbits or species other than dogs or cats.
