Girraween Veterinary Hospital (NT) and Reynella Veterinary Clinic (SA) are our Otoflush competition winners!!

The latest Dermcare Club promotion was a great opportunity for those clinics in Australia that use Otoflush to win a video otoscope pack.

Video Otoscopes provide great feedback to vets and clients about patient’s ear health and responses to treatment, and can record images to monitor the progress of treatments. Often, they are an expensive and out of reach piece of technology that clinics cannot afford.

Today, two clinics in Australia won a video otoscope pack! They are:

Girraween Veterinary Hospital (Northern Territory)

and

Reynella Veterinary Clinic (South Australia)

Congratulations to the two winners, and well done to all those clinics that entered!

Using Natural Shampoo on your Puppy!

What shampoo can I use on my puppy?

Christmas time is an exciting time for many, but can be especially exciting for those who choose now to add a furry, four-legged baby to the family!

Owning a puppy is a fun challenge; one which often brings an overwhelming amount of advice from everyone and everyone. Your local Veterinary clinic is a great source of reliable information, and staff there are happy to give advice on everything you will need to know.

Which food is the best choice, toilet training, what vaccinations are needed and which flea and worming products will suit your new puppy? Puppy preschool is a great place to get all this information, and socialise your puppy! Contact your local veterinary clinic to see if they offer this service.

Most owners like their puppies to smell and look clean and fresh, no matter how old they are! It is important to use a safe and effective shampoo on dogs, as there are a few ingredients and products that should never contact a dogs skin or fur.

These include:

  • Wool Mix
    • Soap Laundry detergents may have harsh acidic or alkaline pH detergents designed to remove grease, they also have bleaches to remove stains and brighten colors.
  • Tea Tree Formulations
    • Tea tree is poisonous, containing turpines and irritants and should not be used to bathe your animals.
  • Human Shampoos
  • Sunlight

So, what shampoos are safe for use on your new puppy?

All of Dermcare’s shampoos are safe for use on dogs. If your puppy has irritated or abnormal skin, consult your veterinarian for their recommendations on our range of medicated shampoos.

For a puppy with normal, healthy skin- Dermcare recommends using Natural Shampoo.

Natural Shampoo

  • A gentle cleansing, hypoallergenic shampoo
  •  Soap free & pH balanced
  •  Suitable for use in conjunction with flea rinses and  spot-on flea treatments
  •  Has a coconut smell
  •  Suitable for dogs of any age

Using a conditioner after shampooing will moisturize your puppy’s skin, and help to detangle the fur. We recommend using the Aloveen leave-in conditioner after bathing your puppy with Natural Shampoo.

Dermcare Supports Greyhound Adoption

Greyhounds make very loyal and loving pets! There are many available for adoption around Australia.

The Greyhound Rehoming Centre Inc (GRC) is a not for profit organisation based in Brisbane and on the Tweed coast. Dermcare supports the adoption of greyhounds surrendered to the GRC by performing dental scale and polishes on these pets before they leave for their forever home.

Dermcare nurse Jacki is just one of our staff who assists with these procedures, and is pictured below with ‘Sailer’, who has since been adopted into a loving family!

Dog of the Week: Flloyd the Malaseb mascot

Flloyd, the handsome Bull Mastiff, is the star of our new Malaseb brochures. He is right at home in front of the camera! Flloyd lives in Lismore, NSW, with his family Mat, Tarra, Texas and Rafferty.

In the hot Northern Rivers weather on Sunday, he got to enjoy a bath with his favourite Dermcare shampoo, with all his young fans pitching in to help get him squeaky clean. A good shake afterwards to get rid of the excess water, and he was ready to get on with the rest of his busy day of sleeping, eating, and sleeping!

Malaseb Medicated Shampoo is for the treatment of yeast and bacterial infections and aids in the treatment of ringworm. Breeds that have deep skin folds, such as Mastiffs, Bulldogs, Shar-Peis and Pugs can benefit from Malaseb baths every fortnight to help keep the growth of bacteria and yeast in the skin folds under control. Dermcare has a full range of shampoos to suit the needs of every pet, so talk to your vet today about selecting the right one for the summer months ahead.

Merry Christmas from the Dermcare Family!

Dermcare Head Office is getting excited about Christmas- by dressing up their pets!

Professor Ken Mason’s furry best friend, and makeshift reindeer, ‘Jazzy’ is pictured below with Technical Veterinarian Dr Susan. Nurse Jacki cuddles her newest four-legged family member ‘Rebel’.

From the whole team at Dermcare, we hope you all have a very merry Christmas, and a prosperous new year!

And finally, a tip from the team of vets, vet nurses and animal lovers here at Dermcare…

Ensure you and your pet have a happy and healthy Christmas- cooked bones, like the ones from your Christmas turkey or ham, can make your pet very sick! Once you’re done with your lunch, just throw them out- don’t throw them to your pet!

Merja’s radio show

Our staff here at Dermcare are a multi-talented group. Our Scientific Director, Merja Ruutu, hosts a fortnightly radio show in her native language of Finnish. The show airs every second Wednesday on 4EB (98.1FM) and covers a range of topics from women’s equality issues in the developing world, to relationships and immigrant homesickness. 4EB is a radio station that gathers together different language groups who can broadcast in their own language. Brave dog of the week

There was some drama in the Dermcare family earlier this week when our clinic manager Jacki’s dog was involved in an altercation. Gizmo, a tri-coloured Pomeranian, was minding his own business at Jacki’s property when he was attacked by… a rat. Poor Gizmo, weighing in at 3kg (and most of this is fur) received two puncture marks to his medial right forelimb. The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for Gizmo, who is due to compete at the National Agility Dog Trial next week in Durack. Thankfully, following a course of antibiotics and strict rest, Gizmo has now healed and is all set for the competition. He maintained a brave face throughout his ordeal. You can find Gizmo on Facebook at Gizmo Agility Pom.

PS. The rat didn’t make it.
