Dermcare’s Evening Seminar in Brisbane

Last night just under 100 Brisbane vets got together for a night of continuing education with Dermcare,

The topic of the evening was Canine Cushing’s Diease and Feline Hyperthyroidism. These are two of the leading endocrine disorders of the dog and the cat. Dermcare’s wonderful Technical Veterinarian Dr Susan Dwyer presented lots of information to the vets; including diagnostic techniques, treatment options and patient monitoring. Both diseases have options for management available to all veterinary practices, but each case varies and can be challenging at times.

It was a great opportunity to ask tricky questions and review difficult case studies with Dr Susan. We hope all of the vets enjoyed themselves and learnt a thing or two!

Many thanks to MODA events for the great venue and delicious food.

If you are concerned about your pet’s health in any way, we recommend you see your local veterinarian for the best advice.

AVA Pan Pacific Conference 2015

AVA PAN PACIFIC CONFERENCE

BRISBANE, QUEENSLAND. MAY 24th – 29th 2015

Each year, the AVA holds an annual national conference in one of our capital cities. Every five years, the AVA and the New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA) come together for the Pan Pacific Veterinary Conference. This year, the Pan Pacific Conference took place at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Around a thousand delegates attended the conference, checking out the local and international speakers and furthering their knowledge of veterinary medicine. The week long conference had eight streams of choice for each veterinarian to choose from, to ensure that the information they draw upon and the advice they give to pet owners is the most up-to-date available.

We at Dermcare decided to dress our stand with a park theme. The Dermcare Park featured some of our most common allergy causing plants and grass- we know all about these!!

During the day, vets were able to join us for hand massages with our Vitamin E cream. During the evening, the park turned into an ‘outdoor’ movie cinema- with delicious popcorn and Australian features!

Dermcare ran an allergy based quiz throughout the week, giving our vets the chance to win a set of clippers- a working set of these never goes astray in our clinics!

Our lucky and gracious winner was Dr Simon Wong (QLD)- pictured below with his territory representative, Sara Message, and Dermcare’s technical vet, Dr Susan Dwyer.

Whisper’s Weekend Wash

Here at Dermcare, we love our pets, and that’s why we use Dermcare products! This is Whisper, a 7 year old Australian Cattle Dog owned by our Technical Vet Susan.

Whisper’s dad Ed is seen here washing her with Aloveen Oatmeal Shampoo and after rinsing her thoroughly, he applied Aloveen Intensive Conditioner to keep her coat soft and her skin moisturised.

The Aloveen range contains colloidal oatmeal to retain moisture, and aloe vera to act as a natural anti-inflammatory. It is perfect for dogs and cats with sensitive skin and allergies. It has a lovely scent which keeps pets smelling fresh.

Whisper was very well behaved in the bath, and ran straight to the treat jar afterwards for her reward.

Dermcare visits Thailand for WSAVA 2015

Our technical veterinarian and Sales and Marketing manager, Susan, has just returned from a trip to Bangkok, Thailand. She attended the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Congress held at the Bangkok Convention Centre from May 15th to 18th.

In Thailand, Dermcare products are distributed through Zoetis, so Susan was able to meet the Zoetis team and help out on their stand. She also joined over 100 other Congress attendees to compete in the charity fun run in Lumphini Park, Bangkok. Money was being raised for the WSAVA Foundation, whose goal is to provide veterinary services and improved animal welfare and health across the globe. More information can be found at http://wsavafoundation.org/

After the conference had finished, Susan spent the day at the Zoetis Thailand offices and provided training for the local Zoetis representatives. They were kind enough to provide not one, but two cakes for her birthday! Further travel in South East Asia is planned for later in the year.

Girraween Veterinary Hospital (NT) and Reynella Veterinary Clinic (SA) are our Otoflush competition winners!!

The latest Dermcare Club promotion was a great opportunity for those clinics in Australia that use Otoflush to win a video otoscope pack.

Video Otoscopes provide great feedback to vets and clients about patient’s ear health and responses to treatment, and can record images to monitor the progress of treatments. Often, they are an expensive and out of reach piece of technology that clinics cannot afford.

Today, two clinics in Australia won a video otoscope pack! They are:

Girraween Veterinary Hospital (Northern Territory)

and

Reynella Veterinary Clinic (South Australia)

Congratulations to the two winners, and well done to all those clinics that entered!

Using Natural Shampoo on your Puppy!

What shampoo can I use on my puppy?

Christmas time is an exciting time for many, but can be especially exciting for those who choose now to add a furry, four-legged baby to the family!

Owning a puppy is a fun challenge; one which often brings an overwhelming amount of advice from everyone and everyone. Your local Veterinary clinic is a great source of reliable information, and staff there are happy to give advice on everything you will need to know.

Which food is the best choice, toilet training, what vaccinations are needed and which flea and worming products will suit your new puppy? Puppy preschool is a great place to get all this information, and socialise your puppy! Contact your local veterinary clinic to see if they offer this service.

Most owners like their puppies to smell and look clean and fresh, no matter how old they are! It is important to use a safe and effective shampoo on dogs, as there are a few ingredients and products that should never contact a dogs skin or fur.

These include:

  • Wool Mix
    • Soap Laundry detergents may have harsh acidic or alkaline pH detergents designed to remove grease, they also have bleaches to remove stains and brighten colors.
  • Tea Tree Formulations
    • Tea tree is poisonous, containing turpines and irritants and should not be used to bathe your animals.
  • Human Shampoos
  • Sunlight

So, what shampoos are safe for use on your new puppy?

All of Dermcare’s shampoos are safe for use on dogs. If your puppy has irritated or abnormal skin, consult your veterinarian for their recommendations on our range of medicated shampoos.

For a puppy with normal, healthy skin- Dermcare recommends using Natural Shampoo.

Natural Shampoo

  • A gentle cleansing, hypoallergenic shampoo
  •  Soap free & pH balanced
  •  Suitable for use in conjunction with flea rinses and  spot-on flea treatments
  •  Has a coconut smell
  •  Suitable for dogs of any age

Using a conditioner after shampooing will moisturize your puppy’s skin, and help to detangle the fur. We recommend using the Aloveen leave-in conditioner after bathing your puppy with Natural Shampoo.

Dermcare Supports Greyhound Adoption

Greyhounds make very loyal and loving pets! There are many available for adoption around Australia.

The Greyhound Rehoming Centre Inc (GRC) is a not for profit organisation based in Brisbane and on the Tweed coast. Dermcare supports the adoption of greyhounds surrendered to the GRC by performing dental scale and polishes on these pets before they leave for their forever home.

Dermcare nurse Jacki is just one of our staff who assists with these procedures, and is pictured below with ‘Sailer’, who has since been adopted into a loving family!
