For the reduction of lesions and pruritus associated with equine Culicoides spp. bite hypersensitivity (Queensland Itch/ sweet itch) in horses.
Equicort® QLD Itch Treatment for Horses is a novel topical therapy for the reduction of lesions and pruritus associated with insect bite hypersensitivity in horses. It contains the active ingredients budesonide, a glucocorticoid, and permethrin, an insecticide, providing control of skin inflammation, reducing pruritus, and addressing the cause of the disease by killing biting midges.
Budesonide is a locally acting steroid that when applied topically, is absorbed and retained in skin cells by undergoing reversible esterification, providing a longer duration of activity and prolonged anti-inflammatory effects.
Permethrin targets sodium channels in the nerves of insects leading to paralysis and death.
Equicort® is formulated in a leave-on conditioner that moisturises the coat, is easy to apply to both haired and non-haired skin, and readily absorbs into the skin without leaving a residue on the coat.
Equicort® QLD Itch Treatment is registered for use in horses.
The use of a topical insecticide containing permethrin, such as Dermcare Permoxin™, may
be applied between Equicort® treatments if additional insecticidal action is required, or if a
maintenance insect repellent is required once control of clinical signs has been achieved.
Directions for use:
Prior to first use, prime Equicort® QLD Itch Treatment by pressing firmly on the pump several times until the conditioner is primed.
Dosage:
Each pump dispenses 1.5g of Equicort®. One pump will cover one open-hand sized area of affected skin. Only apply enough product to cover affected areas, up to a maximum of 40 pumps or 60mL per horse per treatment.
The maximum dose may be used once weekly for up to 6 weeks.
The dose of Equicort® should be reduced as soon as the extent and severity of clinical signs have improved, to achieve the lowest dose and frequency to keep the horse comfortable.
